FORT OGLETHORPE, GA (WRCB) -
The Fort Oglethorpe Police Department has fired one of its officers for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a 16 year-old girl.
Chief David Eubanks confirms Cecil Kevin Shadwick was terminated around 3:00pm on Tuesday, following an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. Eubanks cited in the termination letter that Shadwick broke department policy, violated the public’s trust and left his post without permission.
Eubanks says he received a complaint from a mother, claiming her 19 year-old daughter had been in a relationship with Shadwick since she was 16 years-old. Eubanks asked the GBI to investigate the allegations. The investigation confirmed Shadwick had been in a relationship with the young woman, but he has not been charged with a crime.
“The GBI found no sign of criminal wrong doing,” Eubanks told Channel 3.
In Georgia the age of consent is 16.
Eubanks says he chose to terminate Shadwick because he left his post and engaged in activities with the girl while on duty, leaving him unavailable to answer calls. Shadwick had been with the department for more than eight years.
