Engine failure eyed in runway fire

Posted: Updated:

(NBC News) Federal Aviation Administration investigators are searching for the cause of Tuesday's fire on a British Airways 777 as it prepared for take-off from Las Vegas.

The plane burst into flames as it headed down the runway for a flight to London's Gatwick Airport.

The fire appears to have started in the left engine and quickly spread.

The crew immediately began evacuating passengers.

"There was no hesitation from them whatsoever," said passenger Dominic Worthington.  "The exit doors were open. They were literally in full swing.  It was like clockwork for them to be honest" It's obviously scary for them too"

Of the 170 people onboard more than two dozen were injured, though none seriously.
