CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

A man who helped make Chattanooga history passed away this morning.

Frank Newson was among the city's first group of african american police officers.

Friends say the 78 year-old died early Wednesday morning.

Newson was one of 6 men who joined the force in September, 1964.

Ralph Cothran, who became the first african american police chief in Chattanooga,  and former officer Napoleon Williams were also in the group.

Williams describes Newson as a legend.

Newson was in charge of the Narcotics Department.

John P. Franklin Funeral Home is handling the memorial services.
