SC prosecutors seek death penalty for Charleston church shooter

Posted: Updated:

South Carolina prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty for Dylan Roof, the man accused of killing 9 people during a Bible study session at a Charleston church.

On June 17th, police say 21-year old Roof opened fire inside Emanuel African Methodist Church.
Roof faces federal hate crime charges and obstruction of the practice of religion in addition to nine counts of murder.
Prosecutors say they will pursue the death penalty against Roof because more than 2 people were killed and because he put additional lives at risk.
A South Carolina solicitor said that Roof's crime calls for the ultimate punishment.

Scarlett Wilson, SC 9th Circuit solicitor, "While none us, none of us has the heart for vengeance, we all have the resolve to seek and to find justice in this case.
This was the ultimate crime, and justice from our state calls for the ultimate punishment."

Roof's next court appearance is scheduled for October.
