UPDATE: Man has been identified in I-75 southbound fatal accident

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The man who died in Monday morning's I-75 S at Bonny Oaks Drive accident has been identified as Kenneth Mills, he was 59 years old.

Police have opened up a portion of the interstate that was shut down during a fatal crash involving three cars on Interstate 75 this morning.

"We worked with TDOT to get that done because traffic backs up pretty quick here," said Chattanooga Police Traffic Lt. David Gibb.

Traffic was still blocked off as first responders worked to extricate the driver from one of the vehicles just after 8 a.m. Officers have since re-opened the two left lanes of travel heading south.

Chattanooga police responded to a fatal crash on Interstate 75 just before 6 a.m. Three vehicles were involved, including an RV and an SUV that received collateral damage from hitting debris from the crash.

"What... we can tell so far is that the 18-wheeler came off the road and centered the guardrail and ended up where it is," Gibb said. "It could be one of three things: distracted driving, he fell asleep or possibly medical."

The interstate was initially shut down at exit 9. As of 9 30 a.m., crews were working to tow vehicles from the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.

This marks the 26th traffic fatality in Chattanooga this year, surpassing all of 2014 that had a year-long total of 25 deaths.
