Craigslist buy turns into armed robbery on Rossville Boulevard

Posted: Updated:

Chattanooga Police are looking for a man who robbed another man at gunpoint on Rossville Boulevard Saturday. The victim was there to buy a cell phone but ended up getting robbed with his family watching.

"I texted back and forth several times today about a cell phone on Craigslist that I was going to buy," says the victim.

The victim did not want to be identified.

He says after contacting a seller on Craigslist about buying an iPhone 6, they agreed to meet at a store on Rossville Boulevard Saturday afternoon.

"I stepped out. He shook my hand. And then he pulled the phone out of his pocket and reached to hand it to me but pulled it back," says the victim.

The Craigslist seller pulled out a gun.

"He had the gun about two inches from my stomach and said, 'Give me everything in the wallet.' He was real calm. 'Give me everything in the wallet.' And I gave him all the cash that I had and he said, 'Everything!' And I had to show him that my wallet was empty and that's when he demanded the cell phones."

He says he is thankful he did not see his daughter in the back seat of the car.

"Then demanded my cell phone and my wife's cell phone who was in the car. He didn't see my daughter in the back seat or he would have gotten her phone too."

The man bolted.

"That's when he told me to sit still, "No sudden moves. Stay parked.' And he crossed Rossville Boulevard and ran east on East 34th."

he says his family is still in shock.

"My daughter is pretty shaken over it. My wife was kind of confused. And I'm just mad," says the victim.

He says the man sounded nice over the phone and a database revealed the iPhone he wanted to buy was not stolen. He also thought he would be safe meeting in a public place.

"It's sad that you can't believe anybody."

Now he questions if he will do any online deals ever again.

"I've bought and sold a lot of things on Craigslist over the years but never again," says the victim.

The suspect got away with the two phones and almost $300.

The victim describes the armed robber as a black man in his mid to late 20s, around 6 feet 2 inches tall. He was wearing a bright blue New York Knicks jersey and had a tattoo on his forearm that may read 'Loyalty.' He drove off in a Green Honda Accord.
