UPDATE: Chattanooga teen shot multiple times

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: Chattanooga Police say a 14-year old is expected to be okay after being shot multiple times.

Police were called to the 3100 block of 7th Avenue around 5:00 p.m. Sunday.
Officers found the teenager with 4 gunshot wounds.

Both police and neighbors are relieved the 14-year-old boy is okay. Friends say he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, very lucky to be alive

Neighbor Tabbitha Baker told Channel 3 she heard the gunshots before running outside.

"I came running outside, I didn't see nothing, I waited for a few minutes then I saw the car come down really fast and it went that way," said neighbor Tabbitha Baker.

Baker tells Channel 3 she wasn't sure about the make or model and she couldn't see inside of the car. Police believe the teen was shot during a drive-by shooting. Investigators say it's too early to say if the teen was the intended target.

"We're currently investigating that.  We're getting different stories as to the suspect vehicle and the suspects themselves," said Asst. Chief Tracy Arnold, Chattanooga Police Dept. "When we get some solid information, then we'll be able to put that out."

One bullet hit the boy's chest, another hit his thigh, 2 bullets hit his arm. Eyewitnesses say the boy was alert when police arrived.

"He was standing up, then sitting at the front of the porch with a white t-shirt wrapped around his arm," said Baker. "I'm praying for his family, I just hope they catch who did this. I've been here 18 years and nothing bad like that has happened on this street and they're a really good family."

The injured teen was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Officials said he is in stable condition.

"He's very fortunate, we're happy to know he is going to survive his injuries," said Asst. Chief Arnold. "We take any type of violence toward our citizens very seriously, whether it's an adult or a child. It's just human nature, any time children are injured that bothers us just a tad bit more. We're working diligently, we've got interviews going on currently, and evidence coming in so hopefully we will have this solved pretty soon."

Chattanooga police ask anyone with information regarding this crime to call 423-698-2525. The investigation is ongoing, police say more information will be released when it becomes available.
