KNOXVILLE (WBIR) -

Two dogs found beheaded in rural Knox County had suffered numerous other forms of abuse, according to the Knox County Sheriff's Office.

The bodies were found early Wednesday at the corner of Jenkins Lane and Canton Hollow Road, just north of Fort Loudoun Lake.

The early morning discovery shocked Tara Gillespie.

"I couldn't believe it," said Gillespie, who lives nearby. "When I came up it took my breath away."

Gillespie's brother-in-law found the dogs on the way to work. Their bodies had been subjected to substantial trauma. Law enforcement officials said the pair had been skinned, burned, and had their legs broken.

"There's other abuse to the animals at this point," said KCSO spokeswoman Martha Dooley.

While she waited for law enforcement to arrive, Gillespie sat with the animals.

"It's the most horrible thing I've seen in my life," she said. "It's just inconceivable and you just wonder what makes a human being so evil as to hurt something so precious."

Investigators collected the bodies, and will have a veterinarian examine them for more evidence. It's unclear at this point if the dogs were killed before or after they were injured.

"We're asking for the public's help," said Dooley. "If you have any information, please call the Knox County Sheriff's Office."

In the meantime, Gillespie, once concerned about illegal dumping of trash – has another worry.

"Now we have to worry about evil people doing stuff like this," she said.
