Dalton unemployment rates dip for May

Unemployment rates for Dalton went down to 6.6% for May, down one-tenth of a percentage point from 6.7% in April. The unemployment rate for May 2014 was 8.1%.

The rate in Dalton, the only area rate in the state that declined, fell as the number of new layoffs dropped, while the number of jobs increased, according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Labor.

Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.1%, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 7.7%.

Statewide, Georgia's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for May was 6.3%, up from a revised 6.2% in April. It was 7.3 % in May 2014.
