Soddy Daisy man arrested for child abuse

SODDY DAISY, TN (WRCB) - A Soddy Daisy man is facing child abuse and neglect charges after being caught on camera attempting to hit a child.

Soddy Daisy police arrested Daniel Nelms, 37,  on Tuesday.

According to court records, police were called to a business on Dayton Pike. An eyewitness reported Helms hitting a child and yelling at the child in the parking lot. Nelms admitted to striking the child because he “had a lot on his mind”.

Surveillance video from inside the store showed Helms attempt to hit the child in the head. The child was also left alone for a period of time.

The child was turned over to a family member and child protective services was notified.

Nelms was booked in the Hamilton County Jail with a bond of $1,000.
