A Chattanooga man is charged with attempted first degree murder after he admitted to assaulting his sister Saturday night.

Christopher Merriman, 48, called police to report the assault on Trailwood Drive around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Police arrived to find Merriman with blood on his legs and shoes. Officers found his 54-year-old sister inside the residence.

“There was a thick pool of blood below her head and an axe handle lying on the floor, above her heard,” the police affidavit stated.

She was taken to the hospital where she was listed in critical condition with life-threatening head trauma.

Police arrested Merriman on charges of aggravated assault and attempted first degree murder.

Merriman is being held in jail on a $275,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear before Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge David Bales on Friday.
