UPDATE: Wilcox Tunnel renovations to close tunnel through February 2016
By WRCB Staff
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -
UPDATE: The long-awaited major renovations to the Wilcox Tunnel will begin on Monday, August 17, at 8 a.m. and will require the tunnel to be closed through the end of February 2016.
The detour signage will be clearly posted near the project site, in addition to maps available from the Chattanooga Department of Transportation (CDOT).
The Berke Administration has allocated over $2,000,000 in capital funds for substantial renovations to the tunnel, including safety improvements, major lighting upgrades, and a new inner tunnel liner to halt water seepage into the tunnel.
This is the first major renovation to Wilcox Tunnel in decades and it will require full tunnel closure for six months.
To minimize the inconvenience, CDOT staff has created a detour plan that will assure the safest and most convenient rerouting.
The Northbound detour route is expected to add 10 minutes of travel time. To view a map click HERE.
The Southbound detour route is expected to add 15 minutes of travel time. To view a map, click HERE.
CDOT recommends all travelers to plan their commute accordingly and apologizes for any inconvenience the tunnel closure will cause to residents and commuters.
PREVIOUS STORY: Upgrades could be coming to the faulty Wilcox Tunnel.
The city is applying for a grant to improve the existing tunnel, and to create a new tunnel.
The entire project will cost just over 50,000,000 dollars, the city will be responsible for half of that.
Residents in the area say the tunnel isn't safe with leakage problems, narrow lanes, and bad lighting.
The resolution will be taken up at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
