School-Record Eight Mocs Teams Earn APR Recognition
CHATTANOOGA, TN (GoMocs.com)---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had eight programs earn the 2015 APR Public Recognition Award from the NCAA Thursday. This honor is given to teams ranking in the top 10 percent of Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores within Division I in their respective sports.
On the men's side, UTC was represented by golf, cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field. The women's programs recognized were cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field and tennis.
“This is another example of how well our student-athletes are performing across the board,” stated UTC Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics David Blackburn. “We have already set a school record for semester GPA across all sports, so to add another one with this APR announcement is a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff.”
This is the first time UTC has had more than two teams win the award in any given year. It is the fourth in a row for the men's golf program and three consecutive honors for the men's cross country squad. The Mocs were second in the Southern Conference, trailing only Wofford's nine programs who won the award.
The most recent APR is based on data from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. The public recognition awards are part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and are intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
