UPDATE: Driver blames brakes for deadly crash that ended in Dalton spa

DALTON, GA (WRCB) - UPDATE: The man killed in Monday morning's crash on Highway 41 has been identified as 36-year-old Joe Davis of Rocky Face.  

The passenger 33-year-old Amelia Shipman of Rocky Face was airlifted by Life Force to Erlanger in Chattanooga, and her condition is unknown at this time. 

39-year-old passenger Jeff Dean of Chatsworth is in intensive care at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.

PREVIOUS STORY: Dalton police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Thursday morning on illowdale Road.

Police say that a red 2001 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Highway 41, when a burgundy 2004 Mercury Mountaineer driven by Spring Smith, 21, of Knoxville, Tennessee ran the stop sign at Willowdale Road and hit the Civic in the driver's side door.

The impact from the crash sent the Civic spinning into the GQ Spa building.

Nobody in the building was hurt.

Smith told investigators that the brakes on her vehicle failed.

The driver of the Civic was pronounced dead at the scene.

One passenger from the Civic was airlifted to Erlanger in Chattanooga and another passenger was taken by ambulance to Hamilton Medical Center.

The crash backed up traffic on Highway 41 for about an hour.
