ONLY ON 3: Thieves steal $5K in pet meds from local vet

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A local veterinarian wants others in the area to be on alert after thieves broke into her clinic over the weekend and stole $5,000 worth of flea, tick and heartworm medication.

Dr. Sarah Gilliam believes the stolen products will be resold.

Her office on Lee Parkway had only been open two months when the thieves cut the cable and phone lines, pried open the back door and stole the medication over the weekend.

“Someone would just walk in, into something that's yours and not theirs. It's obvious they don't belong here. I felt very violated,” Dr. Gilliam said.

She says the thieves didn't touch the cash register, the safe or even a laptop. She believes they were here for one thing only.

“Trifexis, Comfortis, Revolution, Iverhart Max, and Interceptor,” she said.

Channel 3 discovered ads for these products on Craigslist. While it doesn't mean those items were stolen, Dr. Gilliam says by buying this medication through a third party in an effort to save a buck, can put your pet at risk.

“They should only be sold through a veterinarian. They were illegally obtained if they're from somewhere else. But if your pet has heartworm disease and they take this medication and they are not under the supervision of a veterinarian, they can become very ill or even die,” she said.

The manufacturers of the products sell only to veterinarians.

Bottom line, if the seller doesn't ask for a prescription from a vet, you may want to rethink your purchase.

Chattanooga Police say they aren't aware of any other cases like this one happening in the area.

They advise clinics to help deter burglars through things like motion sensor lights and security systems.

It's also important to note that many of these medications have serial numbers and can be traced back to where they came from.

If you have any information, call Chattanooga Police at 423-698-2525.
