KNOXVILLE (News Sentinel) -

Butch Jones only has 15 football players taking classes right now for Tennessee's summer mini-session and about 10 more on campus beyond that, but the Vols coach said he can sense that his players are ready to get back to work.

Just two weeks after the end of spring exams, Jones said he's already hearing from players who went home after the semester who say they're excited to come back.

“A lot of times you do need to go home and get away and spend time with your family,” Jones said Monday during a Big Orange Caravan stop at Bristol Motor Speedway. “... But now they're ready to come back. As a coach, that's what you like to see is players reaching out to you, calling you, text messaging you. ‘Coach, it's been great, but I'm ready to get back to work.' I'm even having Jalen Hurd now send me videos of him working out. That's exciting to see the excitement in our players' eyes and to feel their excitement in their voice when they call. It's ready to get back and go to work now and do what we do.”

The players don't have to wait much longer. Jones said all of the returning players will be in town when the first summer session begins on June 1. Incoming freshmen will have their arrivals altered by their own high school graduations, but the early enrollees will be in Knoxville as well.
