TN Aquarium release tagged sturgeons in to Tennessee River

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - It's Endangered Species day and it was a big one for a few fish that could teach researchers at the Tennessee Aquarium things they've been wanting to know.
Eight Lake Sturgeon were released in to the Tennessee River, each one was implanted with sonic tags.
The tags will "broadcast" unique signals. Until recently, scientists say they have struggled to establish a strict monitoring program.

Dr. Bernie Kuhajda, TNACI Biologist, "The reason we're doing this is because for past 15 years we've introduced Lake Sturgeon into the Tennessee River since they disappeared in the 1960's. We've put 150,000 in the years and now we're interested in their movement."

Scientists with the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute say Friday marked a new phase in the "Saving the Sturgeon" program.
