Appeals court to decide in renaming of Civil War parks

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Court of Appeals has heard arguments over whether to change the controversial Civil War names of three Memphis parks.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1Fk67GR ) three judges met with the attorneys involved in the legal battle on Tuesday.

In May 2013, the city was sued by Individuals and Citizens to Save Our Parks after the City Council passed resolutions in February 2013 to rename Jefferson Davis, Confederate and Bedford Forrest Parks. The organization claimed the city was "revising or suppressing history" by renaming the parks. The council said the organization had no legal standing since renaming the parks posed them no harm.

A former Shelby County judge dismissed the lawsuit last August, which led to the appeal.

The judges could take several months to make their decision.
