CLEVELAND, TN (WRCB) - Cleveland Police Department Captain Dennis Maddux has submitted his letter of retirement to the Cleveland City Council Tuesday night.

In early 2015, Maddux was named as Chief of Police following the medical retirement of former Chief David Bishop.

One day later, Maddux was demoted back to Captain the next day due to an incident in McMinn County involving Cleveland Police Officer Jeffrey Griggs and his wife and an alleged affair.

The letter, which cites the Internal Affairs investigation as “subjective, presumptive and unorthodox” also says that Maddux' “failed marriage and private life should not be a factor in the demise of an otherwise flawless career.”

A news from Cleveland Police Department Public Information Officer Evie West says that City Manager Janice Casteel accepted Maddux' letter of retirement from the City of Cleveland, effective immediately.

The retirement letter forced the conclusion of the disciplinary process with Dennis Maddux that was previously underway
