UPDATE: Driver in fatal semi crash identified

BRADLEY COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - UPDATE:  Family consoles each other as investigators do their work along APD 40. Billy Whaley drove for A Plus Pallet Company and died in the crash. 

Two other drivers made it out alive. They were taken to Sky Ridge Medical. Whaley's daughter shares memories of her father with Channel 3.

A wonderful grandfather, a very loyal, dedicated, hardworking man," said Lori Howard, Daughter.

It took Bradley County firefighters a few hours to control the fire.

The fuel tanks on the trucks made it more difficult.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said around 8:30 a.m. Friday, one of the trucks pulled on to APD 40, and that's when the collision happened. What happened next is still under investigation. Lori Howard got a phone call about the crash.

I just prayed that everyone would be okay, and just let me get here safely," said Howard.

Whaley who just turned 69 in April leaves behind a big family. They say it's going to be tough moving forward.

Right now, I'm going to try to be strong for my mother, and my children, and my brother. I just have a lot to process today so, said Howard.

The American Red Cross was on scene offering assistance. 


Cleveland police tell Channel 3 that the fiery crash Friday morning has claimed one life.

Family members say that 69 year-old Billy Whaley died in the crash of three semi-trucks Friday morning in Cleveland.

Whaley was working part-time as a truck driver, according to his family.

The other drivers involved in the accident are identified as Jeff Whiticker of Bethpage, TN and Joseph A. Kambo.  Both men were taken to the hospital for their injuries. The extent of the injuries unknown.


PREVIOUS STORY: A collision between three semi-trucks near APD 40 and Goldstar Drive Southwest of Cleveland resulted in a fire about 8:18am Friday.

One semi was reportedly heading into the Giant Truck Tire Service & Trailer Repair and struck two other semis in the process.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

An eyewitness told Channel 3 that the fire was brought under control and re-erupted.
