Riverbend Festival 2016: Get to know Ogya World Music Band

Music and dance have always played an integral part in the life of KOFI MAWUKO aka Lawyer,a native of Ghana, West Africa. He began learning traditional rhythms on various tribe drums at the age 10.

As a member of Kyirem Cultural Performing Troupe,Ghana's first national children's dance company,he settled in London where he taught music and dance at local schools,composed songs and wrote plays for local theater groups. His musical compositions were selected for production in the first Pan-African Historic Theater Festival and the first African Emancipation Day held in Accra,Ghana. His work have been publicized in numerous television and movie productions in Accra,Ghana and London England.

In 1998 Kofi mawuko came to Atlanta,and then moved to Chattanooga Tennessee in 1999 and became a resident of Chattanooga, since then. Kofi,Omar,Ali and Fareed.four accomplished musician friends, who became jobless after 911, and started playing street music in Atlanta,gave birth to Ogya World Music band in 2002. Kofi the founder of Ogya World music Band still leads the band with his high energy music and performance,that will make you dance. Ogya highlight performances include opening for Ladysmith Black Mambazo,Ruben Studdard,Dirty Dozen Brass Band,Oliver Mtukudzi.

In 2006, Ogya's first performance on a big stage was at the Riverbend Festival Chattanooga Tn in 2006. Ogya has performed at on of the largest music festivals in the world Bonnarroo Manchester Tn. from 2009-2014. Other big festivals appearances are,Dogwood Festival Atlanta Ga. Kuumba Festival Knoxville Tn. ValleyFest Dunlap Tn. Berry College World Music Festival Rome Ga. Just to mention a few. Kofi have appeared numerous times on television and local news papers throughout the southeast as performing and teaching artist. He have been featured in magazines such as City Beat,ChattanoogaNow,Pulse in Chattanooga Tn.,Enigma,Rolling out,Creative Loafing in Atlanta and The Daily News Journal in Murfeesboro Tn. Kofi believe, to be a good musician,to be an inspiration,one must listen freely with all one's being to the spirit of music-all music.

The Ogya World Music Band will be on the Chevy Stage at 7:30 p.m. on June 11th.
