Howard High students stand up for teacher placed on leave

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Howard High's principal will only say their band director is on leave, but parents and students stood in solidarity Tuesday night, in support.

The crowd of about 30-demonstrators outside the school said they're upset that Mr. Bell has been suspended. Students say they found out through an announcement over the intercom that they're not allowed to practice or to be in contact with Bell.

Students say they're upset, calling Bell a  stand-up teacher and preparations for an upcoming performance have come to a halt.

Jessica Cummings, Howard High student, "He  [Mr. Bell] was really the only person in this school building that we could trust and talk to, and engage in conversation and feel like we had more than just a teacher. He was our father.  For them to just take that away from us. It hurt me, and I'm still hurt."

Students we spoke with say their protests will  continue until the issue is resolved.
