CLEVELAND, TN (WRCB) -
UPDATE: A suspect wanted for a brutal assault case using a hammer in Bradley County is now custody.
Adam Blake Mahathy, 27, of Rogersville, Alabama faces an attempted murder charge after allegedly breaking into his ex's place on Burkeridge Drive Tuesday and beating her current boyfriend with a hammer.
The Bradley County Sheriff says Mahathy used an old key to get into the home. Once inside Mahathy apparently attacked Paul McClary, 35, in the head and face with a hammer. The girlfriend was not injured.
Mahathy was picked up Thursday night in Acworth, GA and is awaiting extradition back to Bradley County. Besides the attempted murder charge, Mahathy also faces aggravated burglary.
PREVIOUS STORY: The Bradley County Sheriff's Office is investigating a domestic assault that sent one man to the hospital on Tuesday morning. Investigators aren't releasing many details about what happened. However, the homeowner tells Channel 3 his daughter's ex-boyfriend attacked her new boyfriend with a hammer.
"I don't know what they were doing, what had happened, nothing. I don't know anything," said resident Jeff Allen, who was sitting outside for hours and keeping an eye on the house down the street.
It turned into a crime scene around 6:15 a.m.
Investigators were busy marking pieces of evidence and dusting for fingerprints in the front yard. It's not a common sight around Burkeridge Drive, said Allen.
Details were limited on Tuesday afternoon, but Channel 3 confirmed that a domestic assault happened earlier in the morning.
"We're still in the early stages of this investigation," said Capt. Gabe Thomas.
Channel 3 spoke with the homeowner, who was at work when the assault took place.
He said his daughter's ex-boyfriend broke in and attacked her new boyfriend with a hammer.
Bradley County EMS confirmed that one person was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
As of Tuesday afternoon, investigators hadn't named a suspect. They say charges are pending, but no arrest had been made yet.
"Not at this time," Thomas said. "But the detectives are working really hard to try to piece together what's happened."
The Sheriff's Office believes this was an isolated incident and said that residents should not be alarmed.
"Everything is under control and taken care of. There's no reason to be in any type of panic," said Thomas.
Family members tell Channel 3 that the victim is in critical but stable condition.
It's still unclear how the suspect got inside, but the homeowner says the man used to live there and may have still had a key to get inside.
Investigators with Bradley County's Criminal Investigation Department are at a home in Cleveland, where they have been most of the morning.
The Bradley County 911 Center received a call around 6:15am in regards to a possible assault at 109 Burkeridge Drive.
Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene; one left with a patient aboard. The status of that patient is unknown at this time.
Investigators have the home blocked off with crime scene tape and can be seen taking pictures inside the home. A spokesperson says additional details will be release shortly.
Channel 3 has a crew on scene and will continue to update this developing story.
