UPDATE: Dade County firefighters respond to house fire

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A north Georgia family lost 50 years of memories when their home went up in flames.

The fire threatened a second house belonging to the same family, but firefighters were able to save it. It all happened in Dade County earlier Friday on Scenic Highway.

When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed. Where the homeowners say the loss is hard to bear, especially today.

Channel 3 spoke with that family and they tell us they are heartbroken, but they say they are going to get through this tough time.

Cynthia Courtney could only watch and comfort family members as smoke billowed from her aunt's home. She has fond childhood memories of this place.

"We pretty much grew up here, so it has a lot of memories, said Cynthia Courtney.

Dade County firefighters were called to the home on Scenic Highway around 10:30 Friday morning. Cynthia was listening to a police scanner when she heard the fire call.

She rushed to the scene when she realized it was the family's home. By then her loved ones had gathered to watch helplessly as fire crews went to work.

"Just everything they worked for, for generations and just to see it." said Karen Hardin.

Courtney says her grandmother built the home more than 50 years ago. Friday would have been her grandmother's birthday.

Now most of what the home contained is gone. Fire investigators believe the fire was started by paper burning in a wood stove. The homeowner was trying to stay warm.

"Just be careful, I know this morning was kind of cool, but as you see this morning it was a problem," said Ray Cross, Sheriff, Dade County.

The family says they are glad no one was injured. And they are relying on their faith and fond memories of this place as they move forward.

"They will rebuild and through faith, God will see us through it all," said Hardin,

Fire crews are on the scene of house fire in Dade County.

Firefighters were called to 7938 Scenic Highway.

The family living in the home made it out safely, but worry the home next door, also owned by the family, may be in danger.

Channel 3 has a crew on scene and will bring your more details.
