CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - UPDATE: Now open, traffic was backed up Wednesday morning along the ridge cut for five hours after an overturned semi caused multiple crashes in both directions of Interstate 24.

It all started just before 5:00am in the westbound lanes of Exit 181 when a semi carrying PVC pipe lost its load, spilling into the eastbound lanes.

Crews cleaning up the mess tell Channel 3 the crashed knocked over a light pole and debris along the interstate caused at least four separate crashes in the eastbound lanes causing crews to shut down both directions during the morning commute.

Even though the scene caused a headache for drivers, crews tell Channel 3 no one was seriously injured.

Two lanes of travel in both directions have now opened, but motorists should expect delays for several hours as cleanup continues.

Traffic is backed up for several miles in both directions, and down into Georgia along I-75.
