Water rate hike on hold as TRA makes decision

Posted: Updated:
It could be May before we know if water rates will increase.

That's when the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA) will hold its next meeting and will likely make a final decision at that time.

Tennessee American Water is asking for a five percent rate increase. That would increase the average water customer bill in Chattanooga about $1.21. The money would fund infrastructure capital projects that total more than $17.5 million, including a centrifuge facility to remove zinc which naturally occurs in the Tennessee River.

Representatives for and against the rate hike spoke during Monday's hearing about the possible increase.

TRA's next meeting is May 11th.
