NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A proposal to create a school voucher program in Tennessee is gaining support as it approaches a key committee in the final days of the legislative session.

The measure is scheduled for a vote in the House Finance Subcommittee on Tuesday. If it passes there, it would be sent to the full finance committee, where a similar bill failed last year.

However, sponsors of the legislation believe if it passes the subcommittee, it will receive approval in the next committee and on the House floor because it has gained more than 30 co-sponsors in the last few days. Lawmakers are hoping to adjourn this week.

The companion to the voucher proposal passed the Senate last month. The main difference is that the House bill would delay the voucher program for a year.
