Marco Rubio has told top fundraisers that he is running for president.

The Florida Republican senator told donors on a Monday morning conference call that he is "uniquely qualified" as a spokesperson for his party, a campaign source confirms to NBC News.

The call was first reported by the Associated Press.

Rubio is slated to formally announce his presidential run Monday evening at a rally in Miami.

First elected to the United States Senate in 2010, Rubio has been hailed by backers as a skilled political communicator with impressive foreign policy chops.

The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio would be the first Latino president if elected. At just 43 years old, his youth could offer a contrast to candidates like Jeb Bush, who is 62, and Hillary Clinton, who is 67.

But he faces some challenges within his own party, including ire from some conservatives for his past support for a comprehensive immigration bill.
