GREENVILLE, S.C. (GoMocs.com)– The Chattanooga Mocs softball team wrapped up the weekend on a sour note as the Mocs gave up a walk-off win to the Furman Paladins in a 6-5 series finale on Sunday afternoon in Pepsi Stadium.
With their first conference loss of the season, the Mocs drop to 27-9 overall and 8-1 in SoCon standings as the Paladins improved to 20-21 overall and 3-6 in the league.
The Mocs began the day with a run in the top of the first inning off of one hit. Freshman J.J Hamill ripped a double to right center and ran in off a muffed ball by Furman to put Chattanooga up 1-0.
Chattanooga extended its lead with a run in the third frame as Sarah Beth Roberts lifted a solo home run over the left center wall.
Furman battled back with four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Paladin Taylor Jenkins cashed in on loaded bases with a two-run single to right center. Teammate Lindsey Bert followed up with a single to center field to drive in to more runs.
Consecutive doubles helped the Paladins tack on one more run in the bottom of the fourth.
Still in the game Chattanooga cut Furman's lead to two runs with a home run from Nicole Osterman to lead off the top of the sixth.
With the score set at 5-3 in Furman's favor, Robert blasted a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game.
With the Mocs rallying from a three-run deficit, the bottom of the seventh became the deciding frame. Furman once again loaded the bases to put Chattanooga in a tight spot. Elise Smith launched a 3-1 offering to left field that although was caught by Osterman, gave just enough time for Sieara Bishop to plate the winning run.
The Mocs return to Chattanooga Thursday to host UAB beginning at 4p.m. Chattanooga then welcomes Western Carolina to the Scenic City for a weekend SoCon series.
