Volunteers play big role at Chattanooga Area Food Bank

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

With April in full swing, it's a little known fact that this month is named National Volunteer Month.

Channel 3 spent the day at one area facility that operates almost entirely on volunteers.

Visit the Chattanooga Area Food Bank on any given day and you'll see there are more volunteers than staff.

Through these volunteers, the organization is able to sort, back and distribute over one million pounds of food each month.

“They'll take time off work just to come in. I have teachers that come in on their lunch hour just to put in an hour of volunteer work,” CAFB Reclamations Manager Rodney McCullough said.

They also help save the organization $600,000 every year by donating their time.

Volkswagen of Chattanooga is one of several area businesses that support the food bank. Shireena Avery's group spends the day packing food boxes. It's part of a reward for meeting a fundraising goal for United Way.

“Knowing that our boxes whether 5 or 10 lbs is going to feed some family that wasn't able to purchase it. It's a pretty big deal. It's kind of neat knowing that we are impacting the community hands on, literally,” Avery added.

Another group from Bryan College sort meat through an assembly line. It's how these students are using the school's service day. For Sophomore Noah Lee, it's an experience that's come full circle. His family has relied on organizations like this one in the past.

“You know, we're all in this together. There's a time where you serve and there's a time where you receive and I'm blessed to be a part of this where I get to help others as well,” he said.

Others fill bags, also known as snack packs, for nearly 2,000 kids across the region. These item help kids get through the weekend who would otherwise go hungry.

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank wouldn't be able to operate if it weren't for volunteers like these ready to roll up their sleeves and have a good time giving back.
