Dalton community remembers retired Deputy Fire Chief
DALTON, GA (WRCB) -
A North Georgia community gathered Thursday to remember the life of former Deputy Fire Chief Gary Baggett who died over the weekend.
Baggett was killed in a motorcycle crash on Saturday. He had retired from the department just two months before.
Folks stood along Waugh Street to pay their respects to a man who dedicated years of service to the fire department.
A motorcade with Baggett's body left the church where the funeral was held, and made its way down Waugh Street to Dalton Fire Station number one.
Folks with the fire department then walked behind the casket that was on top of the fire truck Baggett use to ride in.
Bagpipes could be heard while folks watched this solemn occasion. Channel 3 spoke with a woman who works for City Park School which is beside the fire department. She told us Baggett spoke to the students at the school about fire safety, and she said it was only appropriate for the school to lower its flag half-staff for a public servant.
"We try to teach our children in school that he is a public servant, so it is our duty to show our respect." said Debra Pourquoi.
Baggett's casket was placed underneath a tent at the courthouse where a memorial was held.
