Hundreds of volunteers work to cleanup Tennessee River

Posted: Updated:
KNOXVILLE, TN (WBIR) - Hundreds of people on Tuesday afternoon started a massive effort spanning three states to clean up the Tennessee River.

The national non-profit, Living Lands and Waters, arrived in Knoxville as part of its Tennessee River Tour, which is a major cleanup and education project that started 50 years ago.

The tour partnered with Ijams Nature Center's annual "River Rescue."

"We started cleaning out 30, 27, to 25 tons out, and now we are getting down to 15 or 10," said Sarah Brobst of Ijams Nature Center.

But what's different this year is that all the trash and debris removed from the river will be dumped on a barge for the public to see.
