1.9 magnitude earthquake detected in NW Alabama

RUSSELLVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A small earthquake was picked up on instruments in northwest Alabama late Wednesday night.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the 1.9 magnitude microearthquake was about four miles west of Russellville near the Russellville Reservoir. The earthquake happened at 11:37 p.m.

Earthquakes that have a magnitude of less than two are usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismographs. About 900,000 of these quakes occur each year.
