Former UA student to plead guilty to theft of student loan funds from other students

Posted: Updated:
TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) - The U.S. Attorney's office in Birmingham Wednesday announced a plea agreement with Briana Jackson, 22, of Childersburg.

Jackson was a student at the University of Alabama but according to the school, has not been enrolled in classes since 2014.

Jackson was accused of stealing student loan funds from other students. Jackson pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer. Jackson, according to the indictment, contacted UA students via email pretending to represent the University of Alabama Housing Department. 40 of the 60 students Jackson contacted replied with their university account username and password. Jackson then used that information to steal the student loan funds.

Jackson, in the plea agreement, agreed to pay $9,598 in restitution.
