Feds accuse Hixson man of filing fraudulant income tax returns

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - A Hixson, Tennessee man faces up to 3 years in prison and as much as $250,000 in fines if convicted on a 9 count federal indictment revealed Wednesday.

The IRS Criminal Division accuses 44 year old Kevin Mendell Walker of aiding and assisting in the filing of nine false federal income tax returns from 2009 through 2012.

We tried speaking with Mr Walker Wednesday evening at his Esquire Drive home, where his business K & R Enterprises was listed.

He declined speaking to us, referring all questions to his attorney.

"When they do it, it's a blemish on all of us in the profession,"  says Ron Koplan,, a Chattanooga CPA and income tax preparer of 35 years.             Koplan says its easy for those wanting to confirm whether the tax preparation agent hired is registered with the IRS.

"You go to irs.gov website, you type in preparer's name in the search bar," explains Koplan.
We asked him if he could check to see if Mr. Walker is in good standing with the federal tax agency.

"No, he's not listed, so no, he is not registered with the IRS," found Koplan.

We have yet to hear back from Walker's legal counsel for comment.
