MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Nine people have been sentenced to federal prison and ordered to pay restitution for their roles in a lottery scam that targeted elderly victims across the country.

In announcing the sentences, U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said victims would be notified that they had won a lottery or sweepstakes, but needed to pay fees or taxes in advance to receive their winnings.

There were 18 people indicted in the case and three others were sentenced previously. Six of the nine who were sentenced on Thursday were from Horry County. Two are from North Carolina and one is from Georgia.

Each of the defendants also was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $839,827.

U.S. District Judge R. Bryan Harwell noted that there were more than 150 victims of the scam.
