Founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd dies in Georgia crash

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga. -- Bob Burns, a founding member of 1970s iconic rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, died in a single car crash in Georgia Friday night.

According a Georgia State Patrol spokesman, the crash happened just before midnight on Tower Ridge Road in unincorporated Bartow County near Cartersville. Burns was alone in the car at the time of the crash.

Burns was driving around a tight curve when his car left the road. He struck a mailbox and a tree with the front of the vehicle. GSP said he was not wearing a seat belt and died on scene.

Robert Lewis Burns, Jr. was age 64 years old.
