Riverfront construction continues

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - "Where are they going to do Riverbend if it's not done?", asks Summer Martin. She's looking forward to this year's riverbend festival, and wonders what constriction on the waterfront may mean for the main "coca-cola" stage.

"Wondering if it's going to be done by Riverbend. It's coming up, and they're doing construction," says Martin.

For about two months Chattanooga Public Works crews have been driving steel pilings into the concrete to stabilize the soil. It's part of the plan that was laid out in the 21st Century Waterfront Project. Unfortunately, weather has delayed work along the way.

Chip Baker is executive director of Friends of the Festival, the group behind Riverbend. He's not worried about the construction. It's happened in the past close to festival time.

"In 2004 we had a whole site under construction and we all worked together to make it work out," recalls Baker. "We expect to be ready to go June 5th."

Baker says the current work shouldn't affect the seating area for the main stage. However, if weather delays construction into early June, the stage itself can be adjusted. It's mobile!

"Fortunately, the stage floats," adds Baker. "As long as people have a place to sit--and they will--we're excited that everything will be pretty close to normal."

Public Works director Lee Norris says the original May 1 completion date has been pushed back to may 14. Work should be done by then--again, weather permitting

Whatever happens, Martin won't change her plans.

"As long as they're still going to put it on then I'll come down," says Martin.

Also, the grassy area across the street where the ice skating rink was is being reseeded. However, there's no completion date set yet for this part of the project. The area will be used for additional seating for the main stage. The stage that used to be in this area will be under the Olgiati Bridge and is renamed the Chevy Corral stage.

Riverbend run from June 5 through June 13, 2015.
