Walker Valley alum brings Dominican volleyball team to Bradley County

CLEVELAND, TN (WRCB) -

A Walker Valley High School alumna is visiting Bradley County this week, heading up service projects with her volleyball team from the Dominican Republic.   You may have seen them around town this week, building a playground, and doing repairs.

Taylor Elementary school in Bradley County is a more colorful place this week, with students decked out in red, white, and blue.   Those colors represent the USA, and their visitors from the Dominican Republic.   The VC Revolution volleyball team is coached by Chelsie Blackburn, a 2008 graduate of Walker Valley, and a 2012 graduate of Bryan College in Dayton.

The visiting volleyballers are sharing more than just their athletic skills with Taylor students.   They brought along Dominican music and dance, opening the door to new culture and language.   Of course, when you spend time with elementary students you learn a lot from them too.   So the Dominican volleyball team is also getting an education.

In addition to their visit at Taylor, the team has worked with Brainerd Baptist Church and Hope for the Inner City in Chattanooga this week.   Next week, they'll play a volleyball game at Walker Valley on Tuesday evening, and then finish their US visit in Tampa, before returning to the Dominican Republic.
