Chattanooga tries to create a more people-friendly downtown

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Chattanooga officials are trying to make the city's downtown more people-friendly with new zoning regulations.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press ( reports the new regulations are still under development but would require wider sidewalks, tree-lined streets and more pedestrian access to buildings.

The regulations are known as "form-based" codes and Mayor Andy Berke says they are "people-centric."

The move comes as officials are looking for ways to breathe life into areas of downtown.

Berke says members of a Chattanooga Forward task force told him it would create the type of street experience citizens are craving.

Officials expect to take their first vote on the issue in the fall.
