Local church supplies health services for poverty stricken community

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of people showed up for the 3rd annual health fair and Easter egg hunt at East Chattanooga Church of God. It was an effort to help a poverty stricken community get the health services they need.

"What others do for you, you then have a responsibility to then in turn give back to pay it forward," said Nicole Coleman.

Coleman spent her day volunteering at a health fair for those that might not be able to afford health services. She's giving back, after the group helped her own mother when her health care changed and she was unable to afford what she needed.

"Her medicines have become more expensive so there were times she has had to go without," said Coleman.

But thanks to the help of East Chattanooga Church of God, help is readily available.

"It gives me satisfaction knowing she can come here and get the services she needs," said Coleman.

Coleman's story is only one of hundreds, getting the attention they need in a community that's poverty stricken.

"We're probably 90% within poverty level at our school," said Susan Bollinger, Lakeside Academy.

The church has helped for years feeding the students of Lakeside Academy, whom they shared a parking lot with.

"It hit me one day, if they are hungry, if they're asking for food, they're probably not healthy," said Leah Hooper, Outreach Pastor, East Chattanooga Church of God.

25 agencies came together to fulfill that need, providing hearing and vision screenings and advice on nutrition, to help some of the Lakeside families that need it most.

"We've already seen a couple of them today," said Bollinger.

And the rest of the community too. "No matter where they come from, or how much money they do or don't make- they matter,” said Hooper.

All of the money donated today will go toward buying new books for the Lakeside Academy Library.
