CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - An early morning crash Thursday mangled cars, shook up drivers and shut down the interstate.

It happened around 4:30 a.m. on I-75 northbound just past the Ooltewah exit. It's the second major crash on that stretch of interstate in two weeks between Ooltewah and Cleveland that has shut down traffic.

No one was hurt but it caused a big mess and took 30 minutes for one lane to reopen. After 90 minutes, both lanes were re-opened to traffic. The cause is still under investigation.

But now there are discussions underway between multiple agencies to help clear crashes faster and ultimately save drivers from the inconvenience.

"We're getting better about the incidents but we're not shutting the interstates completely down," said THP Lt. John Harmon.

Lt. Harmon said first responders are moving faster when it comes to re-opening the interstate after wrecks. He said getting drivers moving is a priority especially during rush hour.

Harmon said its part of new training amongst THP and other first responding agencies called "Traffic Incident Management" or TIMS.

"Take care of the incident but also open lanes of travel for the motoring public to keep them from being so inconvenienced," he said.

On March 12, clean-up took nearly six hours after a crash in approximately the same location. Harmon said the interstate was only closed for 8 minutes before opening the emergency lane to cars.
