CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -  East Chattanooga will soon start looking a lot brighter thanks to local artists and students, who are working on a mural series memorializing local artist Dennis Palmer.

Art students at Orchard Knob Middle School are putting the final touches on "Painted Gardens."  Depictions of flowers, birds and butterflies, that will soon beautify buildings in East Chattanooga, once characterized by peeling paint and graffiti.

The local group Mark Making, whose mission is to empower individuals and communities through public art projects, is spearheading the mural series. Professional artists like Frances McDonald direct these budding young artists. 8th grader Jaylen Poindexter is among those excited about their work being seen by thousands of motorists each day.

This project is modeled on a similar one on Main Street on Chattanooga's south side.   This one is called "Awakenings," and was done by professional artists and teens from the Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services. It's a lengthy, time consuming job, but the end result is a great lesson for students, and an improved view for Chattanooga's residents and visitors.

The finished project is scheduled to be unveiled in June on six walls at Glass Street and North Chamberlain Avenue.
