ATHENS, TN (WRCB) -

UPDATE:  A house fire Wednesday morning in Athens has claimed the life of a mother of three.

The fire started about 5:30am at the home on McMinn County Road 561 in Athens.

A fire department lieutenant at the scene told Channel 3 that others in the home, including some children, were able to safely escape the blaze.

A family member on the scene confirms with Channel 3 that Michelle Guffey died in the fire.

"She's just a good, hard-working, child-loving mother," said her grandfather Marvin Guffey. "I'm gonna remember the sweet little granddaughter that she always has been."

Marvin Guffey said the three children are under the age of 10.

Fire departments from Etowah and Englewood assisted in battling the fire.

Fire Captain Caleb Martin said they had the fire under control with ten minutes of arriving on scene.

The damage is not very visible on the home's exterior but Martin said there is "significant damage inside the residence" and that the home is likely a total loss.

The Red Cross was at the home assisting the family.

Tennessee Bomb and arson investigators have begun their work at the scene, which is standard practice for a fire with fatalities.
