TN first lady Crissy Haslam visits Reward School in Bledsoe County

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Tennessee's first lady, Crissy Haslam told students at Mary V. Wheeler in Bledsoe County that they were getting extra attention because of their hard work.

The school, in which 93 percent of students are on free and reduced lunch, was named a Reward School last year for dramatic gains in all subjects, especially reading.

Students also participated in Mrs. Haslam's Read 20 program, which encourages families to read with their children for 20 minutes each day.

Principal Candi Kempton and Bledsoe County Director of Schools Jennifer Terry thanked Mrs. Haslam for recognizing the school, which is located in a rural setting on Cumberland Mountain near Pikeville.

They also praised the school's staff for raising test scores.  With an enrollment of 256, and many working parents, teachers are often asked to put in extra time, and their work has paid off.

The school recently observed its 50th anniversary, and Mrs. Haslam's appearance capped off a year of celebration.
