2014 TN Crimes on Campus report released, rape reports spike upwards

Monday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released their annual ‘Crime on Campus' report.

Compiled from information sent to the TBI from Tennessee's college and university campuses, the report shows a variety of crimes and their frequency.

The TBI says that overall, crime reported by Tennessee colleges and universities decreased by 6.3% from 2013 to 2014.

Other findings from the report show:

  • Reported incidents of Burglary decreased by 34.1% from 2013 to 2014
  • Reported Fraud Offenses increased 19% over 2013's study.
  • The reported incidents of Rape increased from 26 in 2013 to 46 in 2014.
  • DUI offenses reported by Tennessee's colleges and universities decreased by 34.9% between 2013 and 2014.

But perhaps some of the more important findings showed that the overall category of “Sex Offenses-Forcible” increased by 74.5% in 2014.

There was a 76.9% increase in reported rapes from 2013 (26) to 2014 (46). The number of sodomy offenses decreased from 7 in 2013 to 4 in 2014.

Drug/Narcotics and Drug Equipment Violations increased 10.1% from 820 in 2013 to 903 in 2014.
