UPDATE: CPD says 3 of weekend shootings may be connected and gang-related

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - UPDATE: Sandra Laster had a front row seat to this weekend's violence.  She says she just wants the violence to stop.

"It don't make sense for people to be out there just shooting each other for no reason," said Laster.

But this could be just beginning. With the warm weather comes more crime.

"But certainly when the weather improves people gather in groups, and when people gather in groups there is more occasion for people to have issues," said Fred Fletcher, Chief of Police.

Four shootings occurred in 48 hours on Saturday. The shots rang out on North Orchard Knob Avenue, 3rd Avenue, and in the Brainerd Road area. On Sunday there was another shooting, this time on Vance Avenue.

Police believe the incidents on North Orchard Knob, Vance Avenue, and Brainerd Road are connected.

They confirm members of rival gangs came together and formed a group to target individuals from another gang, investigators are still looking for answers in the 3rd Avenue case.

"What we do know is there appears to be two groups comprised of gang members who are feuding with each for some reason, we are actively and vigorously trying to figure out what those reasons are,” said Fletcher.

Mayor Andy Berke says despite the weekend's violence, the numbers show crime is going down in Chattanooga. He says he is confident in the city's officers.

"I'm going to support them and I will ask anybody who has any information to call 911," said Berke.

According to CPD's count, there have been 24 shootings this year, with four resulting in death.
14 of them group or gang related. These latest incidents resulted in mostly minor injuries.

One of the victims is in critical but stable condition.

UPDATE: The Chattanooga Police Department says that three of four weekend shootings may be related.

In a news release Monday, Chattanooga Police Department Communications Coordinator Kyle Miller said that preliminary evidence reveals these incidents are likely a result of an ongoing conflict between two groups of people, the majority of which are known members of local gangs.
