UPDATE: CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) Chattanooga police are investigating a crash involving a pedestrian riding in her wheelchair, Friday night. Officers say the woman who was struck by a vehicle was taken to a hospital where she later died.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. in the 2300 block of Gunbarrel road. Officers identified the victim as Roschell W. Ware, 55 of Chattanooga. Authorities said Ware was hit by a vehicle, while traveling in the south bound lane in a motorized wheelchair.
A witness to the collision told officers he was traveling south on Gunbarrel road when he nearly struck the pedestrian in her wheelchair. Shortly after that witness passed, police say a second vehicle came over the hill, hitting the victim.
Investigators said the second vehicle advised officers that they did not see the pedestrian traveling in the southbound lane until the last moment.
Police said Mrs. Ware initially refused to be taken to a hospital but later agreed to be transported for what were thought to be non-life threatening injuries. Upon arrival at the local hospital, officers said her condition quickly deteriorated and she later passed due to unknown causes.
Police said at this time it is unknown whether Mrs. Ware passed due to injuries sustained from the crash or a pre- existing medical condition. Authorities said her body will be taken to the medical examiner to determine an exact cause of death. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time. Investigators said alcohol was not a contributing factor in this crash. Their investigation is ongoing.
