Cherokee Forest squatter gets time served

Posted: Updated:

The man who has twice been caught squatting in Cherokee National Forest, and most recently charged with clearing nearly an acre of protected land to build himself a cabin there, remained stoic during his sentencing in federal court Friday.

Terry Lee Sharkey, 55, and representing himself, responded to questions from a federal judge with as few words as possible — usually a simple "yes" or "no."

He refused to be interviewed by law enforcement after his arrest last year and declined again to speak with probation officers preparing a pre-sentencing report.

Aside from his age, birthplace (in Memphis) and his lengthy rap sheet full of misdemeanor crimes, authorities know nothing about him.
