Athens park renamed for longtime citizen

Posted: Updated:

Knox Park in Athens, Tennessee, will be renamed in honor of one of its longtime citizens.

The Athens City Council has passed a resolution to rename it "Prof Powers Park" in honor of Harold Powers.  He was the principal at City Park Elementary for more than thirty years and has a scholarship named after him at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Powers was also involved in the Battle of Athens at the McMinn County Jail on election night in 1946.

Prof will celebrate his 90th on November 24th.
